Two months ago I began this blog to talk about cultural signposts that were meaningful to me.

One of the basic ironies that forms the basis of this site is the idea that popular culture is both creative and destructive. It involves the creation and dissemination of artwork in various forms – some of which we create, some of which is created for us, some of which is a combination of the two.

Commerce, which can be seen as a kind of art form in its self, has become part and parcel of our daily lives. In fact I’ve written about art that looks at that very subject. But just like any art form, commerce has it’s bad “works”, and it’s dark side. Selling art that is worthwhile – that entertains, enlightens, excites and invigorates us – these things don’t worry me. It is the “bad art” of commerce that worries me. “Art” that feels artless and hollow, business models that sell back to us what we’ve already bought over and over (In new formats). These things bother me. Over the next few months as the blog grows and changes I am going to have to look at these issues and consider options.

This site has been blessed with a fair bit of traffic. Right now the numbers are too fluid to clearly count, but as it stands we are getting somewhere in the neighborhood of 300-2,000+ hits per day. As more and more content is added to the site, the number of people who stay and read more than one article goes up. The statistics on where people go, what they look at and where they come from are all on tap for me to analyze, though it is an art form in its self (analyzing the data) that I have not fully mastered.

Neither has the art of writing. Some of my articles have been better than others. Some of the articles have been more successful than others. I am fortunate that overall I am very happy at what has been done so far, and I look forward to where the site goes from here.

Here at the beginning of things (this blog is less than three months old) I am still laying the foundations for what I want to do in the long term. The last two articles I wrote were both about books – a subject I’ve wanted to write about here for some time. Pop culture is diverse and I want to cover as much good art as I can.

But this site is more than just a discussion of good individual pieces of art. It is also about the people who make art, and about how you can make art yourself. Artists can change the world – their own worlds. They have to ability to become successful and fulfilled in what they do, and the energy and enthusiasm they produce can inspire the people in their lives to reach their own dreams. How people do that will be a part of this site as well. A very important part. The art you create, professional or not, is just as much a part of the heart and soul of this site as anything else. Every consumer is also an artist, or a potential artist. We all create art at one time other another.

As I detail some of my own steps through life as a writer and creator of (some good and very bad) art, you will see that being famous or rich is not necessary to make a difference in the lives of people around you. This blog is a small example of making a difference in people’s lives without a big budget or a lot of fame. It is possible to create your path through life, as long as you understand that the path, and your plans, will change.

This blog is part of what I do. It is part of the art of writing, creating and performing. And as it expands, I hope that you will join me. I have a lot of surprising steps along the way. I have only begun creating. These first two months or so are just the tip of the iceberg. What you see on the site is only a small piece of the work going on behind the scenes to craft something genuinely special. This is PopCultureOfDestruction.com in its infancy.

But what an infancy it has been. Like a glorious childhood that is not yet over, there are many good times to come. Thank you all for your continued support, your traffic, your subscriptions to the RSS feedd and your recommendations to friends and comments to me. All of them are deeply and sincerely appreciated.
